From New York City

Three and a half hours, and you can hear yourself think.

177 miles north-west of Manhattan. A hilltop on twenty-six acres with a sauna, a cold plunge, and nobody else on any of it.

The Drive

Close enough to leave after work. Far enough to matter.

Three and a half hours is the sweet spot for a weekend. Two hours and you have not really left. Five and you have burned a day at each end.

You take the Thruway most of the way, come off into Schoharie County, and the last twenty minutes are the good part — the road narrows, the farms open up, and you climb. Our driveway is gravel and shared with one neighbour whose house you will not see.

What You Are Coming For

Three things the city cannot give you.

Quiet that is actually quiet

No traffic, no upstairs neighbour, no sirens. Twenty-six acres, one shared driveway, and open field in every direction. Most people need a day to stop listening for something.

Sauna, then cold water

A private sauna off the rec room downstairs and an outdoor cold plunge on the deck. No booking a slot, no sharing, no attendant. Sit as long as you like.

A sky with things in it

It gets properly dark here — the kind of dark you cannot buy in the five boroughs. There is a telescope. Most guests use it on the first night and again on the last.

The View

The front door faces due north.

Stand on the deck and the land falls away — down across the Mohawk Valley, out past the farms and the river flats, and up again into the blue line of the Adirondacks on the horizon.

Twelve hundred feet up, a hundred and eighty degrees of it, and nothing in the way. It is the one thing about this place that cannot be copied by anybody else, and it is the reason people book a second time.

Planning It

A weekend that works.

You will need a car. Beyond that, this is roughly how a good two nights go.

Friday

Leave the city mid-afternoon and you are here before dark. Pick up food on the way or in the village — the kitchen is properly stocked, so cooking here is a pleasure rather than a chore. Fire ring, wood already stacked.

Saturday

Sharon Springs village is six minutes down the hill — Beekman 1802, breakfast, the shops on Main Street. Cooperstown and the Baseball Hall of Fame are thirty-four minutes. Howe Caverns is forty. Come back up in the afternoon for the sauna, the cold plunge, and the long light across the valley.

Sunday

Checkout is eleven, which is late enough for a slow morning on the deck. Most people leave later than they meant to.

The House

Room for eight without anyone sleeping in a hallway.

King, two queens, and a hide-a-bed. Three bedrooms, two full baths, sixteen hundred square feet over three levels.

Central air, fast Wi-Fi and a dedicated workstation if someone has to work. Air hockey and a big television downstairs. Crib, high chair and baby gates if you are bringing small ones. Pets welcome by arrangement.
